せっかくの穏やかな冬の日を、うちの中にこもって進化の勉強に費やしている。「盲目の時計職人」で推薦してある本に関して入手可能かどうか調べてみた。
Dawkins, R. The Blind Watchmaker, First Published by Longman 1986, reissued with an introduction 2006, Penguin Books.
ドーキンス氏の2006年版の序文（ibid, xiv）で推薦されている本たち：
１．Helena Cronin, The Ant and the Peacock
２．Matt Ridley, The Red Queen
３．Daniel Dennett, ‘Darwin’s Dangerous Idea’ would colour my historical and philosophical interpretations at all points, and his refreshing forthrightness would embolden my critical chapters.
４．Mark Ridley’s magisterial ‘Evolution’ would be an ever-opening source of instruction for me and my readeres.
５．Steven Pinker’s ‘Language Instinct’ might have inspired me to tackle the subject of language from an evolutionary point of view, had he not already done it so well.
６．The same applies to ‘Darwinian medicine’ were it not for Randolph Nesse and George Williams’s excellent book on the subject (albeit the title wished by the publishers upon the unfortunate authors is the perversely unhelpful ‘Why we get sick?’)

Cronin本： メイナード・スミスの序文付き。The Ant and the Peacock: Altruism and Sexual Selection from Darwin to Today 1992/2/20 John Maynard Smith、 Helena Cronin 中古の洋書、輸入で2400円以上。20年以上前の出版だけになかなか手が出そうにない。
Matt Ridley本： これは最近、ハヤカワ・ノンフィクションなどから邦訳本が出版されている。人気のあるサイエンスライターらしく、ほかにもいくつも邦訳本で出版されている。
Daniel Dennett本： これはオーディオブックで（$27.96）出版されているので、クレジットが付き次第購入して通聴してみたいと考えている。
Mark Ridley’s magisterial ‘Evolution’： Mark Ridley さんは先のマット・リドレーさんとは別人。ドーキンス氏の弟子筋にあたる人らしい。Evolution は教科書のようだ。1996年の第2版、2003年の第3版がそれぞれ中古本で手に入る。第3版以来12年も経過しているが、第4版は出版されていないようだ。第2版は2500円、第3版は8000円以上と、悩ましい価格差がある。悩んだ末に第2版を中古で購入することとして本日オーダー。
Steven Pinker’s ‘Language Instinct’ ： これはオーディオブックで購入可能。大部でもあり、分野的に私には難しすぎるかもしれないが、トライしてみることとした。
Randolph Nesse and George Williams’s ’Why we get sick?’： 今回のリストの中でこの本だけは5年ほど前に通読を済ませている。Ty大学の学部学生のための講義ではこの本の内容などが中心課題になるはずで準備していたが、何回かの試行錯誤の末、人体発生学の教科書を用いた基礎的な学習に軌道修正。今から思うと、結果的に、人体発生学の勉強は私にとってもとても良い学習となった。3年間も教えたので、すっかり自家薬籠中の生きた知識になりつつある。そのかわり、’Darwinian medicine’は深める余裕なしにこの5年を過ごしてしまった。本棚のなかにこのネス本は潜んでいるはずなのだが、今日探してみたところでは見つけ出せなかった。焦ることはないので、そのうち復活させる予定。
