デネット本では、バッハ、モーツァルト、ベートーベンがサイトされる。ビートルズはサイトされないが、巻末付録には Tell Me Why の歌詞と楽譜が載っている。Tell Me Why という曲はビートルズの曲かと思っていたが、巻末を見ると、Traditional となっている。楽譜を見ても、ビートルズの曲と違うではないか。裏扉のデネット氏の肖像写真を見ると、哲学者はこうでなくっちゃというべきか、お髭のお爺様である。本文の記載によると、1995年の出版当時デネット氏にはお孫さんまでいらっしゃるのだ。だからビートルズを子供の頃に聴けた世代の生まれではない。つまり、Tell Me Why という曲は、昔からある民謡（童謡）なのだ。ビートルズの Tell Me Why は出だしが童謡の本歌取りになっている。このことをこのデネット本を読んで初めて知った。（歌詞は以下の脚注参照）

さらにほかにも日本を含めさまざまな国にTell Me Why という歌がいくつもあるようだ。いずれも １）Tell me why the stars do shine を念頭に置いて作られた歌とわかる。１）Tell me why the stars do shine は、デネット氏やビートルズを含めイギリスの子供たちには親しみの深い童謡のようだ。
サマセット・モームはパリで生まれ、幼少時にお母さんお父さんと相次いで亡くしているのでこの童謡 Tell me why the stars do shine を聴いた思い出はないだろう。それでもひょっとしたら信仰に厚いお母さんがおさなごウィリアムを抱いて歌ってくれた史実があるかもしれない。そんなキリスト教文化の下で生まれ育ったことから必然的に、Of Human Bondage あるいは The Summing Up で描かれる主人公（著者・モーム自身）は、その少年時代そして青年期を通じて、神と信仰の問題・人生の意味 The Meaning of Life に関して思い悩みむことになる。そして苦しみながら生きてゆく中で自分なりに答えを見つけてゆく。幼児のような問いかけ： Tell me why に対して他者から安直にもらった答え、たとえば、Because God made the sky’s so blue; Because God made you, that’s why I love you ではその後の人生において何の慰めにも力づけにもならないのである。
ケニヤと南アフリカで幼年時代を過ごしたリチャード・ドーキンス少年にとっても、１）Tell me why the stars do shine は、お母さんが歌ってくれた歌かもしれない。もちろん今のドーキンス氏にとって、God Delusion の源泉につながるような童謡 Because God made the sky’s so blue; Because God made you, that’s why I love you ーーーこれは大変迷惑に感じられるに違いない。なんでもかんでも神を持ち出して説明して終わりにしてしまうのは便利な投げやりだ。それがこの童謡の歌詞にリフレインされている。ただし、童謡の歌詞など、通り過ぎるべき些細なことか？ それとも違うか？ 今の私には判断がつきかねる。今後ドーキンス本を手に取るときにはこのような具体的な事柄への著者の姿勢に対しても注意を払っておきたい。
歌詞への反論行動の是非はさておき、The Magic of Reality や「虹の解体」の著者ドーキンス氏ならば、Tell me why the stars do shine と子供たちに聞かれたなら、神を持ち出して思考停止で放り投げることはないだろう。夜空の星が瞬いている宇宙の姿を、絡まるツタの葉裏がそよ風にきらきら輝くのを、背景の青空と大地の緑、そこに暮らす生き物たちの世界を、母が子を守り育てる命の連鎖を、地球の歴史と進化の科学の最先端の知識も踏まえて美しい言葉で（それぞれの年齢の子供たちにわかるように）語ろうとすることだろう。
