Richard Dawkins The Selfish Gene スタート。

上記オーディオブックは2011年版。ドーキンスさんの脚注は2011年に書き込まれたものも朗読されていて、一番アアプツーデイトの版ともいえる。著者自身が朗読しているのでこのようなことが可能となるのだろう。
ドーキンスさんそしてララ・ウォード奥さんののすばらしいプロフェッショナルな朗読タレント、おかげで老眼をかこつことなく原著を楽しく理解することができる。
2015年1月29日 木曜日 聴了。CDで14枚、計16時間。生物学を学ぶものにとっては必読書である。が、私はほんの5, 6年ほど前にはじめて通読したのであるから、ずっと晩生といえる。今回、注釈（エンドノート）と2011年朗読版の脚注含めてすべてが朗読されていて全部を通して比較的短い時間で通読（通聴）することができた。オーディオブックのおかげである。ただ、左から右へ通過するだけという結果にならないよう、今後工夫していく必要があろう。まずは手始めとして updated bibliography (参考文献) のところを通覧して次の勉強への道筋を見つけてみたい。
本書 Dawkins The Selfish Gene 巻末の John Maynard Smith による 1982年の書評より（extract from review of The Extended Phenotype）以下、引用：
What it does offer is a new world view. (Dawkins The Selfish Gene, 30th. Anniv. Ed., p359）
It is a book about the evolutionary process — it is not about morals, or about politics, or about human sciences. If you are not interested in how evolution came about, and cannot conceive how anyone could be seriously concerned about anything other than human affairs, then do not read it: it will only make you needlessly angry. 本書 Dawkins The Selfish Gene 巻末の Peter Medawar による 1977年の書評より以下、引用：
The argument of this book is that we, and all other animals, are machines created by our genes… I shall argue that a predominant quality to be expected in a successful gene is ruthless selfishness. This gene selfishness will usually give rise to selfishness in individual behaviour. However, as we shall see, there are special circumstances in which a gene can achieve its own selfish goals best by fostering a limited form of altruism at the level of individual animals. ‘Special’and ‘limited’are important words in the last sentence. Much as we might wish to believe otherwise, universal love and the welfare of the species as a whole are concepts which simply do not make evolutionary sense. (ibid, p354)
巻末引用文からの孫引きなので、本書の本文中のどこに出てくるかは分かり次第書き込みを追加するつもり。オーディオブックで通聴することによる欠点の一つ。今はタイプで英文を書き写すだけで精一杯。

altruism 愛他主義、利他主義。ラテン語 alter [=other] の与格から派生したフランス語 altruisme が19世紀に英語に入ったとのこと。（三省堂 英語語義語源辞典より）
expound は、詳しく説明する、expose, exponent と同語源。ドーキンスにとっては、文化的伝達の単位 the unit of cultural transmission は「ミーム（meme）」

「延長された表現形」もきちんと読んでおきたいが、これまた相当に大部な本である。しかも、調べてみたところ、オーディオブックはまだ手に入らないようだ。
