本書にはモームのお母さんの写真が一枚掲載されている。’The charming and beautiful Edith Maugham’、モームのお母さんの写真を見たのはこれが初めてである。たとえば、オースティン本を何冊も読み進めていても、 pretty とか、 handsome とかいう表現にはしばしば出会うものの、めったに charming とか beautiful という形容詞には出会えない。
’Edith Mary Snell, a ravishing young woman sixteen years his junior’ (ibid., p2) という形容で初登場する。彼は、モームのお父さんのロバートで、パリのイギリス大使館で仕事をする事務弁護士、当時39歳。ということは、エディスは23歳の頃となる。美女と野獣のカップルである。
ravish は、三省堂英語語義語源辞典によると、（通例受身で）人を狂喜させる、うっとりさせる、物を無理に奪い取る、語源は「ラテン語 raopere (=to seize by force) から派生した古フランス語 ravir (=to ravish) の語幹 raviss- が中英語に入った」とのこと。a ravishing young woman は、美しさに関して、動的な表現であり、その最上レベルの形容と言えるだろう。
‘Such a eulogy almost certainly owes more to flattery than fact — however cultured and charming, it is unlikely that an English solicitor’s wife would be received by the Duchesse de Guermantes — but it is nonetheless clear that Edith Maugham was a woman of exceptional allure.
allure は動詞として、「えさなどでおびき寄せる、魅惑する」、名詞として「魅力」。上記の ravishing とほぼ同じ効果を持つ名詞表現であろう。
