Planting grapevines

Ted Goldammer, Grape grower’s handbook: a complete guide to viticulture for wine production. Apex publishers, 2013 USA.

Planting dormant rootings and dormant benchgrafts: (Goldammer, 同書、p77-78より抄録)

1) — Remove the grapevines from cold storage 7 to 10 days prior to planting. Store them in moist sand or shavings in a cool location away from direct sunlight to allow the to warm up and acclimate to ambient conditions.

2) — Common ways to plant vines are with an auger, or waterjet.
a) — Holes for vines should be angered as an independent operation before the day of planting using a 9 to 12 inch (20 to 30 cm) diameter auger. The holes should be about 12 to 18 inches (30 to 46 cm) deep.
b) — The sides of auger holes should be scored with a hoe or hand trowel before planting.
c) — The soil should be moist on the day of planting. Wet soil is apt to compact; dry soil can desiccate tender roots.
d) — The vine roots must be kept wet during planting. Even brief periods of drying can injure the roots. Soak the vine roots in plain water for several hours before planting. — A convenient method of keeping roots wet while carrying vines in the field is to place a number of vines in a 5 gallon (19L) plastic pail half-filled with water. If it is sunny and hot, cover the bucket with a wet cloth.
e) — Place the vine in the hole and gently spread the root system out in all directions in the planting hole.
f) — Trim roots to an even length around 8 inches (20cm). Trimming will allow the root system to be more uniform within the planting hole. However, since most of the reserves of the vine are stored in the roots, plant as much of the root system as possible.
g) — Spread the roots in the hole and backfill with soil. Hold the vine straight while loose soil is filled in around the roots. Make sure the vines are in a straight row.
h) — Tamp soil around the roots and fill the hole but do not pack it.
i) — Rooting should be mounded over with loose soil.
j) — Benchgrafts may be mounded over or protected with a grow tube that is secured with soil. Mounding is recommended as it provides protection from frost, desiccation, and other environmental extremes.
k) — DO NOT add soil amendments such as peat moss, sawdust or manure to the soil being used to backfill the hole. Such a practice creates a ‘flower-pot’ effect, which discourages root growth into the surrounding soil.
l) — For grafted vines, the graft union should be at least 3 to 4 inches (7.5 to 10.1 cm) above the soil level.
m) — Any vines that do not survive should be identified quickly and replaced.
